Flipping the Script on Body Talk: Love, Gratitude, and Grace
Simple Shifts in How You Talk About Your Body That’ll Leave You Feeling Stronger, Happier, and More at Peace
Let’s cut straight to it: your relationship with your body is one of the most important relationships in your life. And yet, for so many of us, it’s complicated, messy, and downright exhausting.
We nit-pick, compare, criticise, and hold grudges against our bodies for not being perfect. But what if we flipped that narrative? What if we stopped waging war and started building trust instead?
Because here’s the thing: your body has always been on your side. Every scar, stretch mark, and curve is proof that it’s been showing up for you, even when you weren’t showing up for it.
The Struggle Is Real—And Relatable
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with my body, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. Since perimenopause first started creeping into my life a decade ago (yes, you read that right! Symptoms arrived at 40!), my body has swelled and contracted more times than I can count. Honestly, it’s been hard to keep up.
Thank goddess I love op-shopping, because one minute I’d need to buy a whole new wardrobe because my clothes were either hanging off me or—let’s be real—I couldn’t even get my foot into the pants leg. Talk about a rollercoaster!
But here’s what I’ve learned: through all the ups and downs, my body is still mine. It’s still been there for me, doing its thing, even when I was too busy being frustrated with it to notice.
Why Body Self-Love Feels So Hard
Let’s be honest: loving your body isn’t easy in a world obsessed with thigh gaps and airbrushed perfection. Everywhere you turn, there’s another ad, influencer, or diet plan whispering, “You’ll be happy when...”
Here’s the truth they don’t want you to know: you don’t have to earn love for your body—it’s already yours. You just have to claim it.
How to Start Loving the Body You’re In
Ready to start? Here are a few simple but powerful ways to build a more loving relationship with your body:
Practice Gratitude
Instead of focusing on how your body looks, focus on what it does for you.
“Thank you, legs, for carrying me through every adventure.”
“Thank you, skin, for protecting me and healing when I need it.” Gratitude shifts your perspective from criticism to appreciation.
Stop Comparing
Comparison is the thief of joy (and body self-love). Every single body is unique, and that’s the beauty of it. If you find yourself spiralling into comparison mode, try this mantra: “I’m not meant to look like her; I’m meant to look like me.”
Treat It with Kindness
Nourish it. Move it. Rest it. Not as a punishment, but as an act of love. Start asking yourself, “What does my body need today?” and listen to the answer.
Flip the Script
When a negative thought pops up (e.g., “I hate my stomach”), counter it with something neutral or positive: “My stomach is strong, and I’m grateful for all it does for me.”
It Won’t Happen Overnight
You won’t start instantly loving your body. It takes patience. A flucking tonne of it! You’ll feel like you’ll never love your body (that was me!). But slowly, you’ll notice that you’re kinder and softer (and not just the soft wobbly bits). That is the start of love.
Keep it up, kind word after kind word. Catch yourself. Flip the script. And do it over and over.
I sometimes don’t love my body…it’s a work in progress. The perimenopausal aches and pains, frozen shoulders, hot flushes, and wobbly belly don’t make it easy, but I still notice the language I use and give it a flucking go! Because it’s the only body I have!

This Week’s Challenge: A Daily Love Note
Write one kind thing about your body every day this week. It can be as simple as, “I love how my hands help me create things,” or as big as, “I’m proud of how strong my body is, even after everything it’s been through.”
Keep them somewhere you can see them. Read them when the self-doubt creeps in.
Because here’s the truth: you’re already flucking flourishing—your body included.

Definitely working on loving my body, brain and heart this year (or body, mind and soul - the whole package) Thanks for the helpful advice 💚
