I would love to visit Finland and more Nordic countries one day. I’ve been to Denmark once for a few days (went horse shopping!!)years ago and it was beautiful, but late spring. I don’t do well in cold although I love the idea of it all! A great read. Thank you ❤️
I was looking for Substack writers in Finland and found you! So glad :)
I moved from Brazil to Helsinki in 2021 and I can relate to many things you said about the winter. Coping with darkness was certainly the hardest, but the idea of dark being a canvas helped me a lot.
Again, happy I found you and Elina. Sometimes I feel a bit lonely as a writer ☺️
In Estonian (southern neighbor of Finland) it is easy for me to relate to many of the things mentioned here. I’d like to add that there is a difference in winter with and without snow. A dark snowless wet winter day can be way more depressing than a snowy day with beauty in nature and fun winter activities to do. Of course for those who shovel the snow or drive on icy roads, the snowless version is preferred state. Without darkness and cold of winter there wouldn’t be the joy of days getting lighter and the first days of switching winter coat for a thinner jacket. And it’s incredible how happy the returning green leaves on trees and the first spring flowers can make. For now though, the happiness is in woolen socks, baked goods and pile of books.
There is a difference between a winter with and without snow. No snow here right now and it's less inviting. One moment and day at a time and the days slowly get lighter. The contrast of this kind of winter to the shorter winters of Australia (but often with worse insulation and heating!) is stark! Thanks for your Estonian perspective!
Oh.. and No.5 Silence... I will never forget my experience of this in the Finnish Lapland snow covered wilderness.. pure stillness and absolute bliss 🥰
Thank you, Lisa, for having this lovely conversation with me! 🤎❄️✨
