One recommendation is to start paying attention to finances and money. Let me say that the very last thing in the world I'm interested in is my budget but I am convinced that financial literacy is power and lack of financial literacy keeps under the bros thumbs. Lots of good resources out there. One of my favorites is fellow substacker #Laura Gates Lupton.
I am not crazy, I am a badass though. I have been in the medical system for 19 years, and my male doctors have tried to dismiss my concerns repeatedly. But I am not crazy. Loved reading this <3
In 2019 I had a stem cell transplant (my own stem cells) to help me beat MS. It worked. But it put me into ovarian failure AKA menopause (I like to call it Ovarian retirement sounds more fun) BUT ANYWAYS. i started having crazy menopause symptoms at 27, while recovering from 11 rounds of chemo, hot flashess, severe heart burn, insomnia. I went to talk to my stem cell doc about it at one of my appointments and he said he wanted to WAIT ONE YEAR to confirm that my hormones were wrong, and I was really in failure... ONE YEAR. I said no, give me a hormone specialist now, I got a lovely female doctor who took my symptoms seriously from day one.
Jess, that is INTENSE to say the least!!! Flucking hell! Waiting one year at that age is revolting! Thank goddess you got a referral to someone. I think Ovarian Retirement is my new favourite term 💖
I’m glad things have seemed to calm down for you 💛💙❤️
It’s sad how little has changed - but at least we don’t get locked up all that often now for being ‘crazy’. It is infuriating though - and well do the less inclusive males of the species know. They use this to make us look bad. But surely being compassionate and caring is an important strength and not values to be ridiculed. We are different, and we should be. In fact women have more brain cells than men - which is why we tend to be better at multitasking. I think underneath a lot of men (the misogynists and the incels mostly) are afraid because they don’t understand us. This will likely be down to the repetition of these phrases and of patterns of behaviour that’s been handed down the ages. Time for change!
Lisa, did you ever see a film called Frances? It's an old film, I think it was with Jessica Lange. It's decades ago, but it's a great, powerful (and sad, if I recall correctly) film about the lengths men will go to to keep women down. See if you can find it.
This! The poetry collection I'm working on explores gender violence and what it takes for a woman to be heard so I feel by blood turn hot as I type!
Can’t wait to read it!! Maybe we can have a Zoom reading and boil together?!
I look forward to reading your blood curdling poetry 🩵

Yep. Vital.

Wow! Thank you for putting into words the unnamed feelings and frustrations!
You are very welcome!! It needs saying over & over (sadly)
Thankful to be here and now. Cause back then, I certainly would have been called a witch.
"Menstrual phases just like the seasons?! Teas and tonics for sleep, bad moods and menstrual cramps? Are you bloody mad, or are you a witch?!"
No sirs, I am using what God gave me. Now step aside!
Yes!! This! ‘Move aside’ is right! 💖

I haven’t seen it but I’ve read about it. Powerful!
